Creating opportunities for dyslexic learners in Western Kenya

The Kakamega Project grew from an international collaboration with a shared goal: to make effective dyslexia education more accessible to children, families and educators in Kakamega County, Western Kenya.

Rachel Barwell became involved in the project alongside fellow Davis Dyslexia Facilitator Claire Ashmore and Geoffrey Ashiono, Director and Lead Tutor of the Math E-Zee Tutoring Institute in Kakamega. Together, the project focused on equipping local remedial tutors and parents with practical approaches to support dyslexic and visual-spatial learners.

For Rachel, the project has been part of a much wider vision, helping dyslexic learners access approaches that recognise how they think and learn, while building skills and knowledge within the communities that support them.

The Kakamega Project continues to evolve, with Claire Ashmore sharing the project's journey, progress and work in Western Kenya.

Rachel Barwell

Rachel Barwell is a Professional Davis® Facilitator who works closely with children, parents, grandparents, and adults to help them better understand dyslexia and other forms of neurodiversity. Rachel specialises in supporting individuals who have spent years masking their challenges, often believing they simply needed to try harder. Through the Davis® Method, she helps people uncover the root cause of their learning and thinking differences, providing practical, life-changing strategies that build confidence, reduce frustration, and unlock potential. Her mission is to help people understand that neurodiversity is not a limitation - it's a different way of thinking that deserves to be understood, supported, and celebrated.
